DESTINATION BIJOU

Extranalities No13: Pictureware 4 at Château Grimaldi in Cagnes-sur-Mer, France. In the portraitroom of Suzy Solidor 2nd – 5th of May 2024 Destination Bijou is a jewellery event organized by the city of Cagnes-sur-Mer and Isabelle Busnell, Sebastien Carré, Juan Riusech. Extranalities is a group of jewellery artists who challenge each other with unusual assignments. For this exhibition we used old American newspaper photos, in which jewellery played a starring role, as inspiration for new work: Pictureware. Artists: Herman Hermsen , Timothy Information Limited , Peter Vermandere , Felieke van der Leest , Sofia Björkman , Denise Reytan , Sara Gackowska , Christoph Zellweger, Catarina Silva Sofia Björkman Statement: On the back of a press photography from 1976, I read an excerpt from an article: “Sometimes nature doesn’t produce the perfection people seem to want”. On another photo there is beautiful woman wearing a head piece made of metal wire which winds around the head like a helmet. In her hand she holds a bird. On Wikipedia I read that environmental degradation is a technological externality. The woman on the picture is artist Mary Lee Hu, who I got to know in Munich when she came to the opening of the exhibition when it was shown there, without knowing about the project.

JELO PROJECT 6

JELO6 Project 2024 at ZAPPEION MEGARON in Athens 23d - 26th of February 2024 JEWELRY AS AN OBJECT OF A PROPRIOCEPTIVE EXPERIENCE Declaration of Sentiments - A New Dialogue Awarded Dimitra Papamerkouri in conversation with Sofia Björkman - For the ”Declaration of Sentiments,” I have chosen to engage with the work of Sofia Björkman. I created a tool, drawing inspiration from the shape of a surgical scalpel – a tool for protection and defense against anything that makes us feel threatened. I selected S. Björkman’s work, because similarly, inspired by needles and pins, she has crafted a series of tools with the aim of restoring strength to women and feminine nature. Her work speaks of the need for a return to an egalitarian society without violence. It is important to me that we can invent tools and devise appropriate ways to use them in our everyday life, so that they help us overcome anything, regardless of difficulty and circumstances. - Dimitra Papamerkouri "Declaration of Sentiments" is a project originally conceived and curated by Co+Lab: Burcu Sulek, Nevin Arig, and Snem Yildirim. It took its name from the Declaration of Sentiments at the Seneca Falls Congress, held in 1848 under the leadership of Elizabeth Cady Stanton. This declaration, signed by 100 men and women, stands as the first organized women's rights record in history, advocating for equal rights for women. The curators of the “Declaration of Sentiments” brought together 20 women artists who have used and continue to use jewelry as a medium within the context of the gender-based struggle for women in the art environment. These artists, not hesitating to embrace hard work, have persevered in their artistic pursuits, earning esteemed positions at art academies, organizing international events, establishing galleries or exhibition spaces, and achieving much more. After traveling to different European cities, the exhibition concluded its journey at Uni.Versus Art Room in Athens. It was then that we decided to give the project a new perspective. "Declaration of Sentiments: A New Dialogue" is thus a group exhibition that speaks to equal human rights and dreams of a creative world that respects women and embraces female energy. The exhibition was curated by Niki Stylianou and Sofia Zarari.

25 ANOS REVERSO

Galeria REVERSO, Lisbon Portugal, 24th of November – 15th of January 2024 “This year REVERSO turns 25. This is certainly an event to celebrate: important for me, of course, but also for all who, at one time or another, have joined in the gallery’s history. The idea is a group exhibition that is a celebration, a moment of joy and encounter. And what title? After much deliberation, the answer suddenly seemed obvious: REVERSO, the name of the gallery, because for me, even after 25 years, this name still encapsulates the meaning of contemporary jewellery. How to tell the story of this ‘reverse’ in a light-hearted way? For this, Valeria Accornero, journalist and curator, came to my aid. She found a very simple and direct key: colours. orange, purple, fuchsia are my colours, linked to my personal history of India and Goa and its suggestions. They are the colours I have chosen over the years for the covers of the catalogues I have produced and in which the work of many of you is documented. In a way, they represent the gallery’s flag. Added to these three colours is another one – bright green for the cover of the next catalogue. We invited Reverso’s artists to create a piece, two or three for 25 YEARS | REVERSO exhibition. They could choose to work on one shade, or even all four. We know that for some artists colour is a habit and for many others it is not at all, but we asked everyone to play along and rethink the next creations that are now on display at the Reverso Gallery from the 25th November 2023.” - Paula Crespo | Galeria REVERSO

SCHMUCK 2023

The special jewellery show at the International trade fair Munich, 8 - 12th March 2023. This year Schmuck 2023 was also shown at the Center del Carme Cultura Contemporània in Valencia during Melting Point April 2023. For over 60 years, the special show SCHMUCK at "Handwerk & Design" has been the most important show in contemporary artistic jewelry. Artists, gallery owners, collectors and jewelry lovers travel from all over the world to this "summit of goldsmiths", because every year, jewelry from the most diverse cultures, generations and artistic contexts come together here in a very confined space. A distillation of current developments in jewelry art: socially critical, personal, witty or poetic - but always refreshingly different! This time, the special show was curated by the British artist Caroline Broadhead. From 600 applicants, she selected 66 participants from 23 countries for the exhibition. Organisation and Funding: Promoter: Gesellschaft für Handwerksmessen mbH. Exhibition Patron: Benno und Therese Danner´sche Kunstgewerbestiftung München. Conception and direction: Wolfgang Lösche, Handwerkskammer für München und Oberbayern. Organisation: Eva Sarnowski, Handwerkskammer für München und Oberbayern. Arrangements: Alexandra Bahlmann. EXTRANALITIES

Extranalities nr. 11: Pictureware 3, Melting Point, Valencia 2023 González Martí National Museum of Ceramics and Decorative Arts Symposium and opening of exhibition 27th of April – 30th of April. The exhibition runs until the end of May. Participants: Herman Hermsen (NL), Timothy Information Limited (UK), Peter Vermandere (BE), Felieke van der Leest (NO), Sofia Björkman (SE), Denise Reytan (DE), Sara Gackowska (PO), Christoph Zellweger (CH), Catarina Silva (PT) Extranalities is a group of jewellery artists who enjoy taking on unusual assignments. The members challenge each other to stretch the boundaries of their artistic process and practice. The inspiration for this exhibition has its roots in the mid-1990s, when Peter Vermandere strolled past the famous bookstalls alongside the Seine. There, he found a black-and-white photograph of a man and a child, draped with paper flower garlands, and thus began a lifelong obsession for collecting photographs in which jewellery played a starring role. This even involved Peter buying an entire archive of American press photos! And it is these ‘jewellery’ photos that the members of Extranalities have used for the inspiration to transform the 2D jewellery stories into new physical 3D works of jewellery: Pictureware.
